Habit Forming

13 Whoever conceals his transgressions will not prosper,
but he who confesses and forsakes them will obtain mercy. (Proverbs 28:13 ESV)

This life takes us to many various places. Both in a physical sense with places we may visit or live, to a spiritual sense based upon how we live life and live out our faith. Throughout this we may gain habits that are not conducive to either our physical life or to our spiritual life. With the physical we must make practical change to improve. With the spiritual we must confess our transgressions and forsake them.

These things are not always easy.

Many things that are not good for us in either realm can become habit forming. In fact I will go so far as to say that this is often the core of the problem. Actions, physical or in our thoughts, become habits that are simply something our head or body continue to repeat. And habits become deep-seated and hard to uproot and put away. They become part of who we are.

To break this pattern we must purpose in our heart, mind and body to seek change. We cannot come at this with half-measures. It is truly an all or none situation. When we do not commit our all to making change those deep-seated habits continue to resurface. This can be especially true with bad habits we form from a spiritual standpoint. Often these stem from some personality trait that we must first determine and accept needs to be changed, and personality is one of the hardest traits to tackle.

But there is value in digging deep down and changing who we are fundamentally. Throughout life there are times when we need to reinvent ourselves, to take who we have become and change it for the better. Nothing is impossible to change.
