16 Your words were found, and I ate them.
Your words became a delight to me
and the joy of my heart,
for I bear your name,
Lord God of Armies. (Jeremiah 15:16 CSB)
Scripture contains great wisdom, but we must consume it if we are to gain that wisdom.
Do you ever take a moment to consider what you are taking in on a daily basis? If you are concerned about your weight, as many of us are, you may count calories. Or if you are athletic you may be cautious about what you consume because you are wanting fuel for your body and not just empty calories.
The same can be said regarding what we consume with our eyes and our ears. Is what we are consuming making us better, are we cutting the fat out of our media intake, is it making us more fit (smarter)?
The scripture I provide here, and the other that I hope you read, should be feeding you daily. But not all of what we consume may feel good at the time. In our scripture, Jeremiah states, “Your words became a delight to me.” We may be able to suppose that it took some time for the scripture he read to take root so that he took delight in it.
It may be that we do not always feel encouraged by scripture, that it maybe touches a pain point or convicts us of some sin. This too is good to consume so that we may become wiser and recognize our sin. It may take time for scripture to be “the joy of our heart.”
