19 How great is your goodness,
which you have stored up for those who fear you.
In the presence of everyone[a] you have acted
for those who take refuge in you. (Psalm 31:19 CSB)
We have this loving God who does more than see to our needs. He actually stores up good things for us as a part of His plan. This is both on earth and is awaiting us in eternity.
The primary problem is that we live in a world of more, more, more. We may have everything we could ever need or want, but we continue to claw and scratch for ever more. If we have one, we want two, if we have old we want new. We all succumb to the lure of the world in one way or another and all of this want for more just wears us out.
Consider most monastic groups come with nothing and own nothing. They are given what they need and work diligently in community for God and one another. But they truly own nothing, or at least, very little. There is a freedom in this. Our stuff weighs us down, it creates a burden of ownership and responsibility that can become so very heavy. Ownership means upkeep and upkeep can be expensive.
I think about this often, considering what needs to be done this week or this month to keep up my home or our vehicles. It is not that having these things is wrong or bad, just that they create a burden of responsibility.
But God is storing up for us things that are not a burden, that only serve to provide goodness in our lives and beyond. He is also doing so in light of those around us, so we must be quick to give Him the glory for all we have and all we expect He will do on our behalf.
