Psalms to Refocus

1 Protect me, God, for I take refuge in you.
I said to the Lord, “You are my Lord;
I have nothing good besides you.” (Psalms 16:1-2 CSB)

The Psalms are a place where we can come and take refuge and refocus our lives. In difficult times it is often best to spend them pouring through these scriptures. In them you can find so much wisdom and so much advice. Times that seem to wear most heavily upon our heart, mind and soul need to be bathed in the Psalms as they are bathed in prayer.

With all that is contained within, I think they can be summed up into the last of our verse; “You are my Lord, I have nothing good besides you.” Each of the poems in Psalms provides supporting scripture to this simple truth.

The value of remaining in the Psalms is one of moving us away from a focus upon ourselves and and back onto God. They allow us to open ourselves to the Spirit within and begin listening to what God is trying to speak into our lives.

When we remain focused upon ourselves we become self-absorbed and often this leaves us with feelings of being alone. Even when others are seeking to reach out to us we may push them away and begin to wallow in our self-doubt and worry. We lose focus upon what is true in our lives and begin to focus only on what we cannot control. We lose sight of the fact that God is always in control.

The Psalms help refocus us and bring us back to the word of God’s truth, creating a new balance in our lives.
