19 Then I’ll say to myself, “You have many goods stored up for many years. Take it easy; eat, drink, and enjoy yourself.”’
20 “But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life is demanded of you. And the things you have prepared—whose will they be?’ (Luke 12:19-20 CSB)
It is good for us to make arrangements for the future. By putting part of our treasure aside for God and part for ourselves we are serving to provide for both God’s plan and our future. In this ever-changing world it would seem the more we do of this the better off we can be in the future. However, we too can fall into a trap of becoming too reliant upon ourselves and forgetting God’s provision.
God wants us to be careful with what He gives us. But this can also lead to a form of hording that is not healthy. We can place our security in the wealth we have set aside, or the life we have built and become complacent with God.
More and more, I have come to believe that God wants us more used up than we would prefer when we come to the end. He wants us to continue to strive on His behalf even when we have reached those latter years. Using what we have put aside for ourselves to continue to further the Kingdom. I don’t believe any of the disciples made it out with much from a world view. But they made it out with a treasure far greater than the world could imagine.
We cannot know what tomorrow brings. Each day provides opportunity to seek God and seek working for His good will. Having something put back is the right thing to do. Having so much that God has no where to work in our lives is not such a good thing. Truly, when is enough, enough?
