46 “Why do you call me ‘Lord, Lord,’ and don’t do the things I say? 47 I will show you what someone is like who comes to me, hears my words, and acts on them: 48 He is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. When the flood came, the river crashed against that house and couldn’t shake it, because it was well built. (Luke 6:46-48 CSB)
Last night we lost my wife’s uncle. He was the third of three strong men who were pillars in our families lives, including he, my wife’s father and my father. Each of these men taught us what it meant to build a strong foundation for life.
As I have gotten older I have understood more and more the value of something being built strong. It may cost a bit more, but it can stand for a lifetime. These men were not perfect, but they worked hard and built strong families who knew proper values and lived them.
I have seen many lives washed away when the floods of life came raging against them. We all experience floods to a greater or lesser degree, but often it is not about how strong the flood. It may simply be the erosion of the lesser things due to values not lived that erode our lives.
To build strong there must be a good foundation and I can think of no better foundation than Christ.
