Money, Money, Money, Mooooney

10 For the love of money is a root of all sorts of evil, and some by longing for it have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. (1 Timothy 6:10)

I was able to ride my motorcycle to work yesterday. Mostly because it was a pretty nice day, but also to save on the gas needed for the trip. I have found myself really fixating on the rising cost of everything, fuel being just one more log on that fire. It is easy to get really hung up on these thoughts and to get quite angry.

But this clearly points to our relationship with money.

Our scripture today has been misrepresented to read, ”The love of money is the root of evil.” But as you see, the scripture actually says, ”The love of money is the root of all sorts of evil.” There is a subtle, but very important difference.

You see, money itself is not evil. But it leads to all sorts of evil. The first of which is our relationship with it. Now, I will be the first to say that I have never had a healthy relationship with it. Money has always been a means to an end. It took me far to long to realize that just letting it slide through my hands was not benefitting my life. Furthermore, I have also learned that hoarding it up is not healthy for my mental state. So I ether used it unwisely, or I became obsessed with holding on.

This is not how God planned for us to approach our treasure. He wants us to use it for His good, not our own. It is not wrong to be prudent. However, it is wrong to be either irresponsible or miserly. Our God given task is to be humble and giving. To use our treasure to help others and to bring glory to God.
