17 Instruct those who are rich in the present age not to be arrogant or to set their hope on the uncertainty of wealth, but on God,[a] who richly provides us with all things to enjoy. (1 Timothy 6:17 CSB)
Contentment is an elusive creature. It is something we chase through many avenues and with many adventures to find that it is both fleeting and fickle. Or actually, it is just we who are fickle.
We seek the momentary pleasures of life that money can buy and then we look to our money for security. But money is a thin facade when it comes to both of these things. It is here today and gone tomorrow. As our scripture says, wealth is very uncertain, yet we believe it will always be there.
When we continually set our hope on things of this earth we will, at some point, become disappointed or disillusioned.
When we turn our daily hope upon, and place our daily security with God he provides us richly with all things. The typical problem is relying wholly upon our own worldly definition of all things. We want to turn that, in today vernacular, to ”all the things.” When God means all the things He is concerned with.
True contentment only begins to manifest when all of our things are in line with all of His things. Then, with our focus upon heaven, we begin to lose our concerns over wealth and security the world provides.
