Sustenance

I am the vine; you are the branches. (John 15:5a CSB)

I have never had a green thumb. However, I know enough to know that nothing grows that is not connected to the source of its sustenance.

The Bible is rife with examples of fruit, branches and harvesting. The culture of it’s day was more agricultural, thus, these examples resonated. In our industrial and more commonly technically connected world we need to retain this earlier thinking. Regardless of the period, something cut from its source of sustenance soon withers and dies. This may be more evident today than we recognize.

We have spent the better part of two years separated from one another. We should have used this to gain a closer connection to our sustenance and vine, Christ. But it does not seem that we have. Furthermore, the branches not being together have further stunted our growth.

Now that we have more chance to be together, we should be taking advantage and finding every chance to grow, every chance to water each other. In this too we should too be looking to spread the sustenance of God’s love, to see more branches emerge from the vine.

We cannot grow, or help others grow, disconnected from the source of our sustenance.
