Salt & Light

13 “You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt should lose its taste, how can it be made salty?[a] It’s no longer good for anything but to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.

14 “You are the light of the world. A city situated on a hill cannot be hidden. (Matthew 5:13-14 CSB)

You are the salt of the earth. You are the light of the world.

This is a well worn analogy in scripture. One used commonly to represent the responsibility of the believer to the world. As salt we are to provide a different flavor to the world around us. Not to be the same as everyone else, thus we become good for nothing. And light so that the salt we bring then shines upon others and Christ can be seen through us.

While this may be a very easy analogy for us to grasp, the execution can be more difficult. Using to little or too much salt for seasoning can ruin the meal. So too light can blind and light can illuminate.

The Spirit guides us in application, but the analogy of salt losing its taste or our light dimming is probably more apt. Over time our message loses its flavor and become diluted by the world. We suffer from distraction and ”life” gets in the way of our commission. As our ”flavor” diminishes our light dims. No longer are we shining upon a hill. Our bulb has grown dim and dirty and we have not done anything to restore its luster.

Maybe it is a good time to reflect upon the flavor we bring and the light we provide to be sure both are still useful to God. That they both reflect our lives in Christ. If they have diminished and renewal is needed, seek The Spirits guidance and The Words wisdom.
