20 In every matter of wisdom and understanding that the king consulted them about, he found them ten times[a] better than all the magicians and mediums in his entire kingdom. (Daniel 1:20 CSB)
When we seek to please God first and give all our first fruits to Him, regardless of our position, we may be sought out by others. Daniel kept to the Jewish laws and did not defile himself with the pagan ways of the kings court. He set himself apart not by trying to be better, but by humbling himself.
When we try to set our selves apart or above others pride often is the driving factor. Success may come quickly and we may find ourselves lifted up to greater positions. But without a constant striving to raise the bar higher and higher it is easy to slide down that slippery slope.
The humble path of a strong work ethic, good moral and ethical decisions, a sunny disposition and a helping servants heart may be a slower but more solid path. It creates trust and value that others see and may go well beyond any position we hold.
We must then remember to give all glory to God for the wisdom, skills and abilities, even for our very position we hold in this life.
