11 It’s not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of the mouth—this defiles a person.” (Matthew 15:11 CSB)
During the period when the scriptures were written there was much demanded religiously about what and how one ate. However, also during this time, and since, there was not enough debate about what was being said religiously.
Today we debate religion, spirituality and all other manner of social topics. With the advent of the internet everyone has a platform and the debates go on endlessly.
However, in our desire to be heard are we even listening? I would venture we are not.
God gave us two ears and one mouth so that we would listen twice as much as we spoke. I have written on this many times before. But the message in our scripture today needs to be closely considered.
Is what we say edifying? Is what we say uplifting? Is what we say useful? Is what we say meaningful?
Any fool can drivel on endlessly. Measured words that have meaning and value are what we need more than ever. While everyone has their soapbox, ours should be the still quiet voice echoing in the wilderness which speaks of God’s love and God’s plan.
