6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you should answer each person. (Colossians 4:6 CSB)
Seasoning brings out rich flavors in the food we eat. But if you have ever had something that was overly seasoned it can ruin the entire experience.
This is why our scripture begins with “Let your speech always be gracious.” God inspired it to be written this way because he knew we humans would season it with too much salt if not.
Knowing this, why does the Bible use salt as a reference so much? Well, salt also preserves. And sometimes salt is needed to cut to the heart of a matter. Salt is very useful when used properly and in the right amounts.
For this reason God seasoned this line of scripture with both grace and salt. He went on to enlighten us through this scripture “so that you may know how you should answer each person.”
You see, how we convey good thoughts is often ruined by bad speech. We wreck our ability to be a good testament to God’s grace and mercy through callous words. Learning how to convey God’s love in a way that seasons the situation with wisdom without ruining it our gruff human nature.
Thus, let our speech always be gracious, properly seasoned with salt.
