Taking Measurements

17 and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith. I pray that you, being rooted and firmly established in love, 18 may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the length and width, height and depth of God’s love, (Ephesians 3:17-18 CSB)

Our scripture today comes from a very powerful prayer for spiritual power in Ephesians. I encourage you to read all of it running from verse 14-21.

The latter part of verse 18 speaks of our comprehension, which I think often falls far short in today’s world. We do not think about God’s love in the dimensions mentioned here. No, we reserve length, width, height and depth for this of this earth, not spiritual things. Thus, it is easy for us to skip past Gods dimensions and not truly comprehend them.

Therefore, lets take some measurements.

Many times when, dimensionally, places or things are hard for us to comprehend so there will be an illustration of a man standing next to a structure. This gives us a spacial guide to the actual dimension of what is being discussed.

Thus, when we see the size of a man next to something like the Eiffel Tower we get an idea of how tall it is without actually being there to see it. However, this too is very misleading as those illustrations are typically one dimensional. It is not until we stand under it that we begin to truly grasp the actual width and height of the tower itself.

So today lets take a moment out of your day. Walk outside and stand next to something larger than you. Your home, a building, a tree, anything. Now look up. Consider the size of whatever you are next to compared to the city you are in. Then the city within the size of the state you are in, then the country, then the world, then the universe.

Now, grasp onto the fact that God’s love for you is longer, wider, higher and deeper than all of this. In fact, it is infinite. It is eternal.
