41 The Lord[a] answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are worried and upset about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary.[b] Mary has made the right choice,[c] and it will not be taken away from her.” (Luke 10:41-42 CSB)
Our lives are made up of many day to day task. Many things that keep us distracted from the right thing. We, as a society, have replaced righteousness with busyness. In many cases what we are doing is not necessarily wrong, but simply focused on the wrong thing.
I have a job to do, a family to manage, many church activities to orchestrate, you may be saying. These things, in and of themselves, are not wrong. But are we making the best choice, the right choice? Or are we simply busy with life?
God wants us to experience periods of solitude so that we might be alone with Him. He wants an intimate relationship with us. He wants to be in the forefront of our minds not riding shotgun or simply an afterthought.
We too often take on Martha’s role, replacing intimacy with activity. We may be doing what we do, like her, for the Lord but we are not taking the time like Mary WITH the Lord.
Today is Sunday and should be a day we slow down in our week, rest, and take large blocks of quiet time with the Lord. Today is the day to make the right choice.
