Under Cover of Night

There was a man from the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews. 2 This man came to him at night and said, “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher who has come from God, for no one could perform these signs you do unless God were with him.” (John 3:1-2 CSB)

Nicodemus was a well known and respected man. Probably not just a man of religion but a man of business. Respected by the culture of his time.

Thus, he came to Jesus under cover of night. He did not want to be seen with the Savior but he knew that there was something valuable Jesus offered.

I had a lady come up to me at a local coffee house I visit reguarly and ask me if I was a pastor. I told her no, I was a Chaplain and we spoke briefly about faith.

The only outwardly visible thing in my possession that could have spoken to the fact of what I do was my bible sitting on the table. I wondered about her insight and had to believe that it was God given insight, a divine appointment.

This goes to prove that our actions speak louder than our words. What people see us doing, and I am sure she has seen me many times in the Word there as I am every morning while writing this. But nothing else about me says “pastor”, surely not my outward appearance.

But I am happy to see that she recognized nothing about me, but Christ in me. This is something that the cover of night cannot hide.
