Occupied

10 I have seen the task that God has given the children of Adam to keep them occupied. 11 He has made everything appropriate[a] in its time. He has also put eternity in their hearts,[b] but no one can discover the work God has done from beginning to end. (Ecclesiastes 3:10-11 CSB)

God knew we needed to be kept occupied. Thus, he gave us work to do, our occupations, and then he gave each of us a divine task, our vocation. One is meant to provide for us, the other is for us to provide for others as God ordains.

Some are called to make their occupation and vocation the same, as they are called into full time ministry. Others of us are given a Spiritual guift that we are meant to employ for God. One is not more important than the other, they are just different.

Regardless, we are made to be occupied, to be busy. It is when we allow “busy” to define us. We are to be about our work with diligence, to not be slothful. There is also time for us to enter into God’s rest. It is when we never do this and let “busy” define us and not God we fall into the trap of distraction.

From the fall we were meant to work, to be occupied. But in doing so we must not lose sight of God.
