22 What has a man from all the toil and striving of heart with which he toils beneath the sun? 23 For all his days are full of sorrow, and his work is a vexation. Even in the night his heart does not rest. This also is vanity. (Ecclesiastes 2:22-23 ESV)
Ecclesiastes is one of those chapters in scripture that can be hard to get through without feeling like life is meaningless. I mean, King Solomon had everything. Literally everything, and did everything and what was his assessment? “Vanity, vanity, all is vanity”.
But too, this line should tell us something, along with the rest of the chapter. Without God there is nothing. We seek, we search and everything we end up with that is outside of what God wants means nothing. Which tells us, more than anything else, that we should seek God in absolutely everything we do. And if He is not in it, we should not be doing it.
“Even in the night his heard does not rest”, how many of us have wakeful nights where our mind will not stop on the day’s events. We are so burdened with life that we cannot sleep. This too, as Solomon says, is vanity. We are worried about temporal things and not giving it all up to God.
Reflect on: Is your toil for God or for yourself. You can tell in the burden in brings to your life.
