Overcome

For everyone who has been born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God? (1 John 5:4-5 ESV)

The operative word in our scripture today is to overcome. Our belief and our faith means that we have overcome the world. It does not mean that we might not sin. No. But it does mean that Jesus has atoned for those sins and we can know that whatever happens to us here, we have a home in heaven.

Even so, the process of overcoming is something that we must do throughout our lives. Scripture tells us that we must die to our sin daily. Pick up our cross and walk with Christ. Everything in this world is fading away, but we can live boldly with the knowledge that through Christ we can overcome it all.

Reflect on: What, specifically, does it mean to overcome in your life?
