5 We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ, (2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV)
As we move into the new year it is a time of reflection on exactly what we have been thinking and doing throughout this last year. It is a chance to prepare our hearts and minds for taking on this year differently.
Three operative words in our scripture this morning become pivotal in this process; Opinion, Knowledge and Obedience.
Our opinions are often far more lofty than we realize. We can find ourselves setting up arguments against things of scripture which are very clear in their direction. However, our opinions often win out because they are coming from a place where we keep God at bay. They come from our very broken and human nature.
Knowledge, especially of scripture, is something that we must make a priority in our lives. If we do not, everything that the world and the enemy toss our way seems to make perfect sense. However, when born against scripture they do not hold water.
Lastly, and most importantly, is our need for obedience. Anything that leads us away from God sets us up for disobedience. Obedience to God is not a burden, for He says that His yoke is light and His burden is easy. Living within God’s plan is not the burden. The burden comes when we see God’s plan but we rebel in disobedience.
