The I Am

58 Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.” (John 8:58 ESV)

Some may not clearly understand the somewhat odd way Jesus spoke about who He was. But we must see Him in light of His eternal nature to understand the I Am.

Jesus did not merely come into being at His birth. No, He has been here, alongside the Father and the Holy Spirit before, now, and ever after. There is no beginning, nor end when it comes to our three in one God. This can be difficult to comprehend, but maybe we are just to believe and it will be all made clear in light of eternity.

We just need to focus upon the fact that our God is, has been and will be forever. He sees us now, as he did Abraham then. There is no past or future in His eyes, only now and for Him time is not relative like it is for us.

We can take comfort in this as we recognize the omniscient nature of God. He will never leave nor forsake us. He is always there and always will be. We can put our complete faith in His everlasting love and mercy.

He is the I Am, because He always was and is and is to be.
