Understand

5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths (Proverbs 3:5-6 ESV)

Today’s scripture is a well worn passage that we do not always adhere to or even fully understand. In fact it is our incessant need to understand that trips us up.

We need to understand that we do not always have to understand.

Some years ago I had a bad habit of using the phrase “you need to understand” in both my business and personal dealings. One day someone looked me straight in the eye and said, “people don’t necessarily need to understand anything.” That actually hit me like a ton of bricks. I literally had a full stop moment where I thought, “they are exactly right, people do not have to understand and in reality rarely do.”

When it comes to our understanding regarding God’s plans we will not always understand. In fact, that may be more the norm than the exception. God’s ways are not our ways. But if we will acknowledge Him and trust, He will ultimately make our paths straight. We need to operate on trust with God.

Seek to understand as best you can but know that you will not always understand everything, and that is ok.
