Love your Brother

19 We love because he first loved us. 20 If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot[a] love God whom he has not seen. 21 And this commandment we have from him: whoever loves God must also love his brother. (1 John 4:19-21 ESV)

If we practice loving our brother (and sister), then how is it we get so angry with one another? How is it that this world is one where hate is the predominate emotion? Scripture tells us it is because we do not really love our brother, and then therefore, cannot love God.

It is true, in this fallen world, there is much that creates animosity between us. But we must practice the love of Christ in all situations. If I am to love God, I must show others the love of God. Otherwise, who am I fooling? Surely not God and probably no one else.

How do we best practice the love of Christ with others? First, we must decide to truly care for others. This does not mean that we may not have need of a hard message for them. But it means that such messages are conveyed in love and compassion. Compassion is one of the strongest purveyors of love.

Thus, when we are showing love and compassion from a place created by God, we are living a Christlike life.
