14 If the work that anyone has built on the foundation survives, he will receive a reward. 15 If anyone’s work is burned up, he will suffer loss, though he himself will be saved, but only as through fire. (1 Corinthians 3:14-15 ESV)
Consider for a moment, coming to the end of your life and then watching as everything you built is put through a refining fire. Everything built upon the foundation of your faith in God survives. But everything else is burned away.
What is left?
Surely, none of your things. Your work? Your relationships? Your knowledge, power, success?
What remains?
These are sobering thoughts. Many of us have spent our lives building careers and families. Do those things have a foundation in Christ. Possibly, but only the legacy you built in those areas where you focused on Christ will survive as a reward in heaven. We store up so much worldly wealth and material possessions. Yet these things are all fleeting. Only that which we built upon the foundation of Christ will remain.
Reflect on: What remains in your life when you peal away everything but Christ? What will follow you into eternity as a reward?
