4 Behold, God is my helper;
    the Lord is the upholder of my life. (Psalm 54:4 ESV)

It is easy to get caught up in this life and forget just who is our Helper and our Upholder. I capitalize those words because they truly can be names for God and we should revere them as such. In fact there are so many words that can be used as names for God and we need to learn to revere each and every one. Otherwise we can slip into thinking we are the one’s making our lives what they are.

Now, it can truly be said that in some people’s lives there seems to be a dark cloud following them around. We may not see this often, but it does exist. Are these people truly unlucky or are they creating their circumstance in some way that we cannot see? In any case, even when things seem to be turning for the worse, we have to focus upon the small things God is doing for us. Maybe it is just the ability to wake up and make it through another day. But this too is a blessing.

When we see God as Helper and Upholder, we begin to see through the momentary difficulties in life to God’s greater plan.
