Shifting Shadows

17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. (James 1:17 ESV)

There is an intrinsic beauty in the shifting shadows cast by a tree blowing gently in the wind. The shapes between shadow and light constantly shifting into different patterns. However, if you ride a motorcycle or a bicycle you can attest to how these same shifting shadows can make seeing hazards difficult. So, while we may love the beauty of such a thing we need to be able to account for the subtle dangers it may hide.

The beauty of our God is that there is no variation or shadow due to His changing ways. He is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. We can count on Him fully and know that all good and perfect gifts come from above and that the light He cast is of pure love.

By contrast our enemy is an ever changing shadow in our lives. Like the dangers hidden in shadows on the road, the enemy lurks in the darker aspects of our lives, intent upon stealing, killing and destroying. He too is a danger we must look for in the shifting shadows of our lives and the world around us.

But we can be assured that any part of our lives we shine God’s pure light upon, the enemy cannot withstand. He runs from the light, so we must strive to live in the light and not cast about in the shifting shadows of this world.
