Water off a Ducks Back

16 The vexation of a fool is known at once,
    but the prudent ignores an insult. (Proverbs 12:16 ESV)

“I know you are but what am I!?”

Insults always struck me as funny and I have typically taken them as water off a ducks back. Thus, I have tended to use the well worn retort above when confronted with an insult. It is childish, I will admit, but is shows just how much weight I give to insults.

Of course, few insults are made to our faces. No, people would prefer to make them behind our backs. Which, to me, gives even less credence to the person or what is being said. I would often say, “if you are going to make something up about me, make it good!”

Now, does this mean that I have not had those who have throughly undermined me in the past. No, I have. But I also had enough faith in God and enough faith in who I was and how I lived, interacted and worked to stand against it. Our reputations are not built upon trying to counter the naysayers. Our reputations are built upon who we truly are. So, insults, should bring us back to two questions; Who we truly are, and who the person insulting us is. This, also, takes us back to the first of our scripture, which reminds us to consider the possible vexation of the one making the remark.

If we are true to ourselves and true to God, the insults will slide off our backs, like…..
