What shall we…

30 But if God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the oven, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? 31 Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. (Matthew 6:30-32 ESV)

I think too often we read a passage like today’s and do not accept the gravity of what it imparts. God will take care of our every need. I believe that our basal problem is at our core we do not necessarily believe this. Which is sad really, because the entire Bible speaks to promise after promise from God. If we cannot accept something a simple as God meeting our basic needs then how can we hope to accept the bigger promises?

The old joke where the guy is on his roof in a flood. A rowboat, a motorboat and a helicopter comes by to save him but he waves each of them off, saying “God will save me”. He inevitably ends up drowning and in heaven questioning God why he did not save him. And of course God says, “I sent a rowboat, a motorboat and a helicopter! What more did you want?”

Our expectations may not align with God’s plan, but we must not look beyond what God sends us due to expectation, pride or a lack of understanding. Our plans are rarely God’s plans. We need to open ourselves to a way that may not be what we had planned.
