Easy Come, Easy Go

11 Wealth gained hastily[a] will dwindle,
but whoever gathers little by little will increase it. (Proverbs 13:11 ESV)

The old phrase, “Easy come, easy go”, was made for this scripture. Over the years, it has seemed like anything gained easily does not last. Probably because we see it as a windfall and we do not manage it like the other, more slowly gained treasures of our life.

While our scripture is focused upon wealth, I think this can be said for many aspects of life. The romantic fling that comes on in a rush and fades quickly. Our fleeting desires for this thing or that thing, disappear in a wisp when we see the next best thing.

However, when we work for something, there is a build up to the gaining of it. There is an anticipation that creates different pathways in our brain and the obtaining of it can then be savored. Fast food is called that for a reason. I call them “throw away” meals, both from what we do after and for the limited value they provide to our bodies. A well prepared and savory meal that can be enjoyed slowly both taste better but can be better for our body.

This logic can be applied to many aspects of life. The one thing that is not easy come, easy go is our relationship with God. Once we have it by accepting His salvation it will last us through eternity.
