Not Bread Alone

But he answered, “It is written,

“‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that comes from the mouth of God.’”

I going to be looking at the scripture in Matthew around the temptation of Christ over the next few days. This small section of scripture has some very valuable truths that we should heed and take time to meditate over.

Our first scripture deals with Christ hunger after having fasted for 40 days and 40 nights. He had just spent a considerable time in isolation and, physically, was in great need of food. The enemy seized upon this moment to try to exploit Christ physical weakness.

How often in our own weary state does the enemy come and tempt us with needs of the flesh. He knows when we are physically weakened we are more vulnerable to being tempted, so he strikes when our guard is down.

But what does Christ counter with? Man does not live by bread alone. He understood that the spiritual body is greater than the physical and that even when the body is weak the spirit can be strong. Furthermore, Christ pointed to where we are to gain the strength we need by pointing to scripture, the Word of God. He knew that we would need scriptural strength to stand against the enemy’s schemes. We cannot hope to stand in our own strength, but need God’s Word to combat the enemy.

It is for this reason that I post these devotionals each morning. As I have said many times, it is more for my fight against the enemy than anyone else’s.
