1 God is our refuge and strength,
a helper who is always found
in times of trouble.
2 Therefore we will not be afraid,
though the earth trembles
and the mountains topple
into the depths of the seas, (Psalm 46:1-2 CSB)
Though the earth trembles and the mountains topple into the depths of the sea.
Sit on that for just a minute.
Our world gets turned up side down at the least little thing. The turn of a phrase or drop of a word and suddenly we are riddled with anxiety and fear. Where is our faith then? Where is our knowledge that God is with us though the earth trembles.
No, let’s face it, our lives are often made of the most fragile of balances between the positive and the negative. We can be on a mountain top one day and deeply mired in the muck of a valley the next.
Why do we live like this? Why do we not find and maintain a balance in Christ through who we have all hope?
If Christ be for us, what can man do to us?
It is because we are not filtering every aspect of life through Christ that our life’s become so fragile. It is because our trust resides more in our own capacity and capabilities and less in a faith in Christ provision.
God is our refuge and strength, a helper who is always found. We need not look beyond this statement to find balance and reliance. Why do we continue to fall upon our own weak and limited capabilities to try to find security and strength? Because our reliance in self, though horribly insufficient, is greater than our faith. Oh what wretched creatures are we.
Only when all things are in Christ do we find peace, balance and sufficiency.
