5 Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not rely on your own understanding;
6 in all your ways know him,
and he will make your paths straight. (Proverbs 3:5-6 CSB)
I have been talking to people of late about trust, or maybe more the lack there of. Trust is something that we all want, but something that does not come easily. Trust is a two way street, it is both given and received. We should desire to build trust in our relationships.
God ask us, as a basis for our faith, to trust with all our heart, mind and soul. This trust is expected because of such a great love that our Father has shown us in His Son. Thus, our well worn scripture today shows us the basis of our faith has it’s home in trust.
But do we trust fully? Some may, but I expect most of us do not. You see, contrary to our scripture we do rely upon our own understanding. In fact we put far more weight upon our understanding than we do in blind trust with our God. This is, for the most part, because our trust and our faith is too often based upon our security and our happiness. Let either of those falter and so does our trust.
You may be saying, “That’s a very harsh statement”, but am I wrong? No, even when we spend much time in prayer and study of scripture, let something negative befall us and our trust wavers. We become worried and anxious and we start to doubt that God has us in His hand. I think we all suffer from this. Maybe a few who are pillars of faith do not. I aspire to be one such pillar, but too often I am the pudding beneath.
Our trust in God must be forged on His love for us and not our understanding of the world around us. It must be forged in a fire born of living within His sovereignty and a knowledge that He will never leave us nor forsake us.
