34 Therefore don’t worry about tomorrow, because tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own. (Matthew 6:34 CSB)
My wife gets up very early in the morning, typically almost two hours before I do. Typically, this is fine because she is very quiet when she does. However, there are times that it wakes me up and my mind kicks into gear before I have a chance to go back to sleep. Anxiety starts to creep in and I find myself wide awake.
I begin to worry about the day ahead. I begin to worry about the things I have not gotten to that might be overdue. I begin to think and worry about life. My head just won’t shut down. So it is just best to go ahead and get up and spend some additional time with God. It is only through doing this that I can calm my run away brain.
Some of this is just my own anxieties playing upon me. Some of it is the enemy exploiting a chink in my armor. Some of it is God bringing to mind things He wants me to refocus upon. Trying to separate the good from the bad in all of that is not easy with a mind that can so easily run rampant in the wee hours of the morning.
Getting up and getting moving is the best remedy to a troubled mind. And, as I said, part of that movement is moving toward the Bible and time with God. Without it I will just play out all of the negative aspects I am dwelling upon and none of the good outcomes that may be possible. Situations are rarely as bad as we make them in our minds.
If you suffer from these same mental gymnastics early in the morning a good cup of scripture can quell a run away mind. They help refocus us upon what is truly important and allow us to get our mind on God first thing.
