Live and Move

28 For in him we live and move and have our being…(Acts 17:28 CSB)

There is a much beloved book I have about the life of Brother Laurence, a 16th century monk. The book is called ”Practicing the Presence of God.” The book is simple, much like his life as a cook for the monastery. Brother Laurence learned to cultivate a continual communion with God through the practice of doing everything for Him. No matter what he did, no matter how menial, he did so through a dedication to and interaction with God. He truly strove to live the life he expected to live in heaven on earth.

But we need an experience. It is as if we are seeking for God to entertain us. Our churches have become production sets that focus upon entertainment to keep people interested. We have become a shallow and easily distracted people. Our viewpoint is at the end of our nose not in the heavenly realms. We seek for ourselves and not for God. And I say this as the chief among sinners.

I do not believe we need to walk around as if we already have halo’s above our heads. No, in fact that would be far worse. Nor should we walk around despondent, head bowed, broken by our sinful nature.

What we should do is enter each day with thanksgiving, dedicating all we do to God and asking for His guidance. Then go about our business, head up, knowing, ”for in Him we live and move and have our being.”
