Rugged Individualism

For I do not trust in my bow,
and my sword does not bring me victory.
But you give us victory over our foes
and let those who hate us be disgraced. (Psalms 44:6-7 CSB)

Where do you put your trust?

I think the answer to this far too often is in ourselves. Many, if not most of us, grew up on a steady diet of individualism. We were taught at an early age that we needed to be strong and independent. At least I sure know I was.

But then we get many years down the road and we realize what a lonely road this dogged individualism can be. We also realize that, by ourselves, we are never all that strong. No, it is through strong relationships that we best endure this life.

Furthermore, we find that life without God to call upon is a very empty life indeed. I almost wrote ”some higher power”, but we need to make no mistake that there is only one higher power, and that is God. The three in One triune of God the Father, Jesus the Son and the Holy Spirit. Each plays a role in our lives independently and as one.

So I began with, where do you put your trust. That individualism makes us want to put it in ourselves, our money, our talent, or other things that make up who we are. But we must keep a constant remembrance that, alone, we are nothing.
