Wait for it

34 Then Jacob gave bread and lentil stew to Esau; he ate, drank, got up, and went away. So Esau despised his birthright. (Genesis 25:34 CSB)

In our scripture today Esau gave up his birthright for a bowl of stew and some bread because he was hungry in that moment. He gave up a greater treasure for a lesser.

How often do we do the same? How often do we give up God for momentary pleasures. We turn aside and follow a darker path to fulfill a fleeting desire.

Our incessant need for immediate gratification may mean we are missing out on a much greater blessing. We simply can’t wait for it. In fact we are a society that cannot wait for anything.

Look, I am not pointing fingers. I am a generally impatient man. Thus, I know all too well this need for everything to be immediate. But if I am honest, what has that impatience bought me? Has it truly gotten me to my destination so much sooner enough to matter? Has my impatience helped me to show God’s love to all I encounter? Has it bought me another second of life?

The only thing our impatience gives us is a harsh nature with others, stress and anxiety. If you do not believe me the next time you cannot wait for something, take a few deep breaths and still your mind. Keep a singular scripture in your mind and pray for what ever you are impatient for. Feel your stress and anxiety melt away.

Some times, most times, it is better if we just wait for it.
