Dwell Richly

16 Let the word of Christ dwell richly among you, in all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another through psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs,[a] singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. (Colossians 3:16 CSB)

Think a moment on the these two words in our scripture today, dwell richly. Let them sink in for a moment. Don’t just think about what they mean but feel the depth and fullness beyond their meaning. Savor the idea.

When we allow the word of Christ to dwell richly among us, we are filled with that word. Scripture takes on new meaning and is no longer just some group of stories on a page. They become fullness, wisdom, and a companion to our hearts. Especially when we read with an eye to Lectio Divina, a traditional monastic practice of scriptural reading, meditation and prayer intended to promote communion with God and to increase the knowledge of God’s word.

It is then when the Word begins to dwell richly within us. It takes on a new fullness and meaning. It becomes palpable and works within us and through us. Making us more than we are on our own.
