Which Stone

So honor will come to you who believe; but for the unbelieving,

The stone that the builders rejected—
this one has become the cornerstone,[g]

and

A stone to stumble over,
and a rock to trip over.[h]

They stumble because they disobey the word; they were destined for this. (1 Peter 2:7-8 CSB)

Our scripture today is referring to Christ and what His ministry represents to believers and unbelievers. He is the cornerstone of our faith, but a stumbling stone for unbelievers. However, have you ever considered what type of stone your life represents?

Are you building a life that is a cornerstone or a stumbling stone?

Now, to be sure, there are periods in our lives where we are both. Times when we are building upon a strong foundation and times when we are stumbling through and possibly causing others to stumble.

This question should require some considerate reflection upon one’s life. Because, while we have periods of both, there needs to be a level of consistency for ourselves and others to build upon our cornerstone. If not, and we have become simply a stumbling block, maybe it is time for a pretty serious change.

And let me be so bold as to say, if you are just getting through this life and not building a legacy, maybe you are the latter.

That may sound harsh but it is a question that needs to be asked. People may hear the word legacy and become fearful or convicted because it can presuppose something grandiose. However, a simple legacy of strong personal faith, reliability or loyalty can be a cornerstone.

We may not live to realize the strength of the stone our legacy bears, but we should be aware that one way or another we daily chisel one stone or the other.
