12 Therefore, whatever you want others to do for you, do also the same for them, for this is the Law and the Prophets. (Matthew 7:12 CSB)
From Wikipedia;
The maxim may appear as a positive or negative injunction governing conduct:
- Treat others as you would like others to treat you (positive or directive form)
- Do not treat others in ways that you would not like to be treated (negative or prohibitive form)[1]
- What you wish upon others, you wish upon yourself (empathetic or responsive form)[1]
We tend to twist many scriptures to fit the script playing within our lives. Quite simply today’s scripture would have us treat others they way we want to be treated. My father use to say, “Kill ‘em with kindness.”
Regardless of how you interpret the words of scripture, the imperative is clear.
When we treat others as well as or better than ourselves, our kindness may or may not be reciprocated. We must remember that we have control over very little, mainly just ourselves and our perspective on the world around us.
But when that perspective is bright, welcoming and positive, it is also infective. While we can only control ourselves, we can have an impact on those around us.
If we are going to infect others, shouldn’t it be for the best?
