1 And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, (Ephesians 2:1)
…lost people don’t need fixing; they need life because they’re spiritually dead
The scripture and commentary above came from my morning devotional from Intouch Ministries. I found it profound because in all of our reaching others for Christ are we presenting the gospel or are we trying to fix them?
I think too often when we hear the brokenness in another we immediately shift into counselor role and try to provide help to find a fix to their problems. In truth we should be presenting the gospel in its entirety so that they have reason to hope. God can see to their fixing once they are believers.
This is not to say we do not want to have compassion for where someone is in life. We are still a part of a presence ministry that strives to hear others out and come along side them in times of need. But our first and foremost reason for doing so is to help them understand loving arms that are eternal await them and there is life, eternal life, waiting there.
Our job is to lead them to the saving grace of Christ not try to fix them, which we may not be properly equipped to do anyhow. If we can in compassion help another by being a sounding board or shoulder to lean on while we point the way, all the better.
