1 The end of all things is near. Therefore be clear minded and self-controlled so that you can pray. (1 Peter 4:7)
Consider how much clutter the world fills your mind with daily. Take a moment and really think about how much trouble you have focusing.
Consider too how much we, in our fallen state, seem to have little self-control. Take a moment and really consider the times in your daily life where you have little self-control (I will help you here, think traffic…).
Now consider prayer and the end of all things. Take a moment and pray for both a clear mind and self-control and the fact that we have no idea when the end might come.
This is a lot to take in, in such a short passage of scripture. If you actually took a few moments to consider each aspect of our scripture you may be feeling a little overwhelmed right now.
God knows how much we need prayer. He too knows how much we are continually barraged with information and frustration from the world around us. He is trying here to give us a recipe to step out of the world and gain some clarity and control through our prayer life.
Prayer can help center us even if it is something simple like this modified Jesus prayer I use quite often – Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the Living God, have mercy on your servant, a sinner.
I pray for clarity and control in your life today.
