12 Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your “yes” mean “yes,” and your “no” mean “no,” so that you won’t fall under judgment. (James 5:12 CSB)
We have seemingly forgotten the simplicity and varacity of a simple yes or no. Instead we have to go into long explanations behind our answers and even then, more often than not, both mean “maybe”.
I believe this is because we have traded the truth for lies. We have allowed ourselves to be lured into a need to continually make allowances. This does not mean that we should not seek common ground. However, it means that there is a point where our decision has to be yes or no.
We, especially as Christians, have been pushed further and further into the tolerance zone. This because, by many, we are seen as intolerant. And any level of intolerance is seen as ignorance.
We waffle from standing on the firm ground of scripture which provides very clear and pointed stances on relevant topics. However, a little push back and our “yes” or “no” becomes a weak “maybe”.
If we do not make our yes, yes and our no, no (in love), we can never hope to stand with confidence in front of God.
