8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us. (1 John 1:8-10 NKJV)
Confession of our sins can be such a freeing action. However, we need to be specific and not just gloss over how we sin each day. We need to take the time and the effort to recall our sins, specifically, and ask forgiveness for each one independently. Prayer should not be a generic catch all for us to idly call on our Father for forgiveness.
Scripture has many verses that focus on conditional aspects of prayer, even when the only condition for forgiveness is coming to the saving grace of Christ. Scripture notes conditions in prayer so that we do not take talking to the Father for granted. It looks for us to be active in our prayer and atonement, not simply tossing words at the Father, but talking and acting in accordance with our attrition.
Reflect on: Your prayer life and how you view coming to the Father to ask for forgiveness. Are you tossing generic catch all prayers at Him, or are you calling out your sins specifically to atone.
No Generic Catch All
