While faith cannot actually be passed down, there is a form of that that does come from our parents. The way we are raised, especially in an existing Christian household, does in a way get passed down. As a child we learn the tenants of faith and we watch our parents live out that faith for good or ill. We then each have a choice to make regarding salvation and a faithful life.
5 when I call to remembrance the [a]genuine faith that is in you, which dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am persuaded is in you also. (2 Timothy 1:5 NKJV)
On this Mothers Day I am reminded of the faith of my mother and the faith I have witnessed from my mother-in-law and my wife’s grandmothers. I did not know my grandmother well so I was not able to witness this in her, but she was ever a kindly lady who I expect had a relationship with God.
Fathers, of course, play a big part too especially with boys. I think each parent has a role to play in teaching us different values of Christianity. Of course not everyone grew up with either Christian parents or necessarily parents that taught well. This is the sad state of our society. In some ways, God becomes both father and mother to us. I think this is especially true after one’s parents pass away.
Reflect on: Remembrance of your mother today and the values she passed along to you.
