The Next Best Thing

11 You make known to me the path of life;
    in your presence there is fullness of joy;
    at your right hand are pleasures forevermore. (Psalm 16:11 ESV)

We, typically, try to eke out what joy and pleasure we can out of this life. We look to experiences or things to bring us happiness and then are confused when what we feel is fleeting. It can even be that we continue to seek ever greater pleasures like a drug. Looking for our next high and then feeling the crash of coming down afterward.

There is only one sustainable sense of joy and pleasure I have been able to find, and that was within God’s plan for my life. Comfort and security reside there and provide something more lasting than the next best thing the world has to offer.

Our lives become a rushing after the wind that never ceases. We flit from experience to experience, activity to activity, without ever slowing down to breathe deep the now. Even in our work we are pressed from task to task, project to project with not a moments hesitation to reflect on our work. This becomes a never ending stack of work that stretches into the distance without a light at the end of the tunnel.

We need to take moments out of every day to breathe deep and reside in the presence of God. Moments that break into the never ending repetition of our lives and elevate our minds and our souls above the din of all around us that clamors for our attention.
