Every Word

4 Even before a word is on my tongue,
behold, O Lord, you know it altogether. (Psalm 139:4 ESV)

Take just a moment this morning and consider every word you spoke yesterday. If you spend any time at all thinking about that you will quickly come to the realization that you probably can’t remember many.

I took a quick look and spastically men speak about 2000 words per day and women some 5000. This is a base average and there is a lot of disagreement in the rough counts. Much of it has us speaking far more words than this. However, I took a day of vacation yesterday and so I think I might have spoken 500 or so. But, aside from some very specific conversations I had, I have little recollection of what I said exactly.

But God knows every word, before we speak it. This is an amazing level of intimacy. We are lucky to remember conversations with our spouse or children. But God knows and cherishes every word we think or utter. Some make Him very proud and some, I am sure, make Him very ashamed. He does not put the words in our mouth, no, He gives us free will to say what we want and we should be being careful with this ability.

Maybe consider your words a bit more carefully today. God is.
