The Full Context

1 Blessed is the man[a]
    who walks not in the counsel of the wicked,
nor stands in the way of sinners,
    nor sits in the seat of scoffers;
but his delight is in the law[b] of the Lord,
    and on his law he meditates day and night.

He is like a tree
    planted by streams of water
that yields its fruit in its season,
    and its leaf does not wither.
In all that he does, he prospers. (Psalm 1:1-3 ESV)

This group of verses is one of my favorite. However, I think many want to condense it into the last sentence.

You see, we want to take scripture out of context to fit our desires, but that is not how either scripture or God works. There is almost always a preface to what God is doing for us. There is almost always a set of criteria. This is why we need to read scripture in its entirety, taking in every aspect of what God is promising.

Take a good amount of time today and meditate on the three verses above. Really take the time to consider how you may or may not be applying all aspects of them to your life.
