7 What then shall we say? That the law is sin? By no means! Yet if it had not been for the law, I would not have known sin. For I would not have known what it is to covet if the law had not said, “You shall not covet.” (Romans 7:7 ESV)
We may focus on the New Testament and, somewhat, discount the Old Testament thinking it’s teachings are dated. But this is not so. The Old Testament stands as a roadmap pointing us to many extremely valuable lessons, promises and truth. In fact, the Old Testament points directly to the New in many, many ways.
Thus, we should use the Old Testament scripture to help us better understand the law so we can clearly see it fulfilled in Christ. We need to glean the gold in the mines of the stories, history, poetry and prophecy found there.
We think that we understand right from wrong, but much in this life would point to the fact that we do not. That we justify whatever we want to believe is right for us, even if it is in fact wrong. We cannot use scripture to justify our bad behavior, for it will clearly point the way to correct actions and thinking. It will point the way to the truth.
