Double Life

25 Knowing their thoughts, he said to them, “Every kingdom divided against itself is laid waste, and no city or house divided against itself will stand. (Matthew 12:25 ESV)

Like a coin we flip into the air to see if it will land heads or tails, we wade into each day in our own personal duplicity. Because there is this constant struggle between our sinful nature and our desire to follow Jesus. Darkness and light vie for every moment.

But as our scripture warns, a house divided cannot stand. I am sure we have all heard stories or watched movies about someone living a double life. These stories normally follow the difficulty of doing so. However, we can do this in our own lives when we allow unrepentant sin to linger. Maybe it is some simple vise that you have that you know is wrong. Maybe it is not getting control of your anger. Possibly it is just struggling to live for God because you are so addicted to your job and success.

We may all live some version of this double life.

But true life is not double life. We cannot live with two masters. Scripture tells us we will love one and despise the other. And while we may feel like we are handling the duplicity well, deep down we know we are not.
