21 Jesus answered them, “Truly I tell you, if you have faith and do not doubt, you will not only do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you tell this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will be done. (Matthew 21:21 CSB)
Many see much, if not all, of the Bible to be metaphorical. True, It can be hard to fathom some aspects of the Bible and some of it was not supposed to be understood this side of heaven.
But Jesus is trying to convey the capability of one who’s faith is deep and strong. And while we may not desire to move physical mountains, there may be mountains in our lives we do need to overcome (move).
The pivotal part in our scripture being; “If you have faith and do not doubt.”
Here too lies the problem. We may have faith, but it may not be strong enough not to doubt. Doubt keeps us from moving the mountains in our lives. Yes, this too is often coupled with a lack of faith. Actually doubt and a lack of faith go hand in hand. We could probably lump fear in there too.
But lets focus upon doubt. Our faith is weak because we doubt God, or we doubt ourselves, or both. Maybe there are very good reasons for our doubt, but most of those do not begin or end with God. No, most of them begin and end with us, with our fallen state.
So what must we do to move our mountains? Bathe both our mountain, and more importantly ourselves, in prayer. This begins the work of moving a mountain. Then cling to whatever small faith you have that God will see it through.
